Andrew Benintendi’s First Major League Home Run Ended Up Being A Double

BOSTON — Andrew Benintendi’s first major league home run seemed scripted. The 22-year-old sent a two-run shot to center field at Fenway Park against the rival New York Yankees to put the Red Sox up 4-2 in the fifth inning.

But it ended up being a double.

Benintendi’s “homer” actually hit the yellow line on the center-field edge of the Green Monster. It initially was called a home run, too, after some confusion, but a crew chief review overturned that call.

Anything to the right of the line would have been a homer.

Still, it wasn’t all a wash for Benintendi, as his double was his second hit of the night and brought in a run to put the Red Sox ahead 3-2 in the fifth.
