Michael Schumacher Still ‘Cannot Walk,’ Lawyer Reveals In Lawsuit

Michael Schumacher’s lawyer has given an update on the seven-time Formula One world champion’s condition, and it isn’t promising.

Schumacher was skiing with his family in the French Alps when he suffered a head injury, in 2013. The German was placed in a medically induced coma for six months following the accident, before returning to his home in Switzerland, where he has continued his treatment.

Updates on the 47-year-old’s condition have been sparse since he went home, but in December, the German magazine Bunte published a report claiming he was able to walk again, according to the BBC. In a lawsuit filed against Bunte, however, Schumacher’s lawyer revealed his client still “cannot walk,” more than two years after his accident.

The lawsuit confirms a statement from Schumacher’s agent at the time Bunte’s report came out.

“Unfortunately we are forced by a recent press report to clarify that the assertion that Michael could move again is not true,” Sabine Kehm, his agent said, via the BBC. “Such speculation is irresponsible, because given the seriousness of his injuries, his privacy is very important. Unfortunately they also give false hopes to many involved people.”

Head injuries are a tricky thing, as is evident from the recent struggles of Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his concussion. Each person reacts differently to them, so there’s no way to accurately predict how long it will take for a patient to recover.
