Major League Baseball free agency always is a slippery slope.

With no salary cap and contracts that inflate every year, it’s easy to overpay for players on the free market. And because that market dictates what teams have to pay for a player, it’s not uncommon for franchises to spend more on a less talented player in one offseason than they could have spent on a better player in a different year.

This year’s free-agent class of pitchers is fairly weak, so it should be interesting to see what kind of money the best ones can get with such high demand. But there definitely are position players for which teams can overpay, too.
