Theo Epstein: Cubs Want To Visit White House Before President Obama Exits

Theo Epstein can’t wait to visit the White House again, and the Cubs are similarly eager to make their first-ever pilgrimage to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave in Washington D.C.

Epstein revealed Wednesday that he and several Cubs players are keen on celebrating their 2016 World Series triumph at the White House with President Barack Obama before he leaves office on Jan. 20, 2017, according to CSN Chicago’s Patrick Mooney.

Obama, a Chicagoan, invited the Cubs to the White House — as has been the tradition for decades — following their Game 7 victory last week over the Cleveland Indians.

Winning teams don’t normally visit the White House until several months after the World Series. But 2016 is no ordinary year, and Epstein said many of the Cubs wanted to accept Obama’s invitation in a rushed visit.

“I know after he tweeted that out — and that was well before the election — there was a lot of interest from our players in taking him up on that invitation,” Epstein said Wednesday. “There was some momentum for it. So we’ll see. Nothing has been finalized. But we’ll see where it goes. It would be nice given his Chicago ties.”

Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton on Tuesday in the 2016 presidential election. Trump will move into the White House on Jan. 17.

Epstein’s feelings about visiting in Obama’s final days in office are clear, but his thoughts on Trump’s shocking election are muddled.

“I’m still processing,” Epstein said. “Let’s put it that way.”

That’s okay. Epstein will have four years to come to terms with the election results.
