Tim Brewster just planned on drumming up some support for his new boss. Instead, he drew ridicule from one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks.
Brewster, the tight ends coach at Texas A&M, tweeted out a photo Monday night promoting the impressive list of defensive backs who played for Jimbo Fisher at Florida State, including All-Pro cornerbacks Xavier Rhodes and Jalen Ramsey. Under Fisher’s tutelage, the tweet implied, six defensive backs (and a seventh who played for new A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko at Wake Forest) had combined to produce 189 NFL starts and command an average salary north of $8 million.
Enter Ramsey, who came in off the top rope with this reply about Fisher:
“He didn’t teach me not one DB technique… #ComeGetSomeRealTruth #GoNoles”
Ramsey’s not-so-subtle message: The Seminoles have produced some great defensive backs, but not because of any wisdom Fisher imparted on them.
The Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback clarified his remarks about Brewster, himself a former Florida State coach, in a follow-up tweet.
“Know I have nothing but respect for you Coach Brew,” Ramsey wrote, “but don’t use me on a poster for a school I didn’t go to & for a coach who didn’t teach me how to be a DB.”
Ramsey’s criticism is a fair one: Fisher served exclusively as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator before taking the FSU gig, so giving him credit for the future success of Seminole defensive backs is like crediting Josh McDaniels for Logan Ryan’s decent season with the Tennessee Titans.
