Cavs Reportedly Suspended J.R. Smith For … Throwing A Bowl Of Soup?

Turns out J.R. Smith landed in hot water for, well, throwing hot water.

The Cleveland Cavaliers guard was curiously suspended at the last minute for Thursday night’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers. On Friday, we learned why: Smith threw a bowl of soup at Cavs assistant coach Damon Jones, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Dave McMenamin.

Nope, not a typo: Smith reportedly chucked a bowl of soup at a coach.

That’s all the details we have for now. We don’t know how big the bowl of soup was, what kind of soup it was (Lentil soup wouldn’t get too messy, but clam chowder? That’s a different story) or the temperature of the soup when Smith threw it.

While it’s unclear what Smith was stewing about (a beef with Jones, maybe?), the veteran guard has been decidedly lukewarm of late, with just 11 points total over his last three games. Perhaps his on-court frustrations boiled over on Jones, a former Cavs player who has been with the organization since Smith arrived in 2014.

Or maybe he was just feeling extra salty — like his teammates after Dario Saric’s late-game shenanigans Thursday night.
