Martellus Bennett Uniquely Announces Retirement After 10 NFL Seasons

Martellus Bennett is calling it a career.

The charismatic tight end took to Twitter on Friday night to announce he will be walking away from the NFL after 10 seasons in the league. And in classic Bennett fashion, he opted for an unconventional way to reveal that he will be hanging up his pads.

“I’ve decided to move on from the world of football and into the fantastical and wondrous world of creativity. I’m beginning what I believe to be my life’s work @ImaginationAgency,” Bennett tweeted. The tweet also was paired with a cartoon photo of Bennett transitioning from football to what appears to be a magical utopia.

After being selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft, Bennett spent time with the New York Giants, Chicago Bears, New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers. He was named to the Pro Bowl in the 2014 season and helped the Patriots win their fifth Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LI. Bennett racked up 433 catches for 4,573 yards with 30 touchdowns over 10 seasons.

The 31-year-old was released by the Patriots earlier this month, but there still appeared to be a possibility that he would return to New England in the 2018 season. While mutual interest might have been there, as well as around the league, it sounds like Bennett is excited about what the future holds outside of the gridiron.
