Superintendent Apologizes After Girls’ High School Basketball Team Wins 93-7

The mercy rule apparently isn’t in effect in the Massachusetts girls’ high school basketball postseason.

East Bridgewater defeated Madison Park 93-7 on Feb. 28 in the first round of the Division 3 South tournament. The lopsided result prompted an apology from East Bridgewater district superintendent Elizabeth Legault, who called the score an “unfortunate situation,” saying it doesn’t reflect the high school’s students or athletics department, according to The Associated Press.

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association reportedly said fifth-seeded East Bridgewater didn’t break any of its rules in the blowout.

East Bridgewater’s tournament run ended Sunday with a 52-33 second-round loss to Archbishop Williams.
