NFL Rumors: Cardinals To Release Adrian Peterson, Might Re-Sign Veteran RB

Adrian Peterson’s next career move might involve a revolving door.

The Arizona Cardinals will release the veteran running back Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports, citing a source. However, the roster move appears to be a cost-cutting decision, which won’t prevent Peterson from re-joining the team next season.

Peterson, 32, started last season with the New Orleans Saints, who traded him to Arizona in October. Peterson rushed for 529 yards and two touchdowns last season for the Saints and Cardinals before a neck injury he suffered in November cost him the final five weeks of the season.

The Cardinals acquired Peterson several weeks after starter David Johnson suffered a Week 1 wrist injury, which ruled him out for the rest of the season. Johnson is expected to participate in Arizona’s offseason activities and likely will reclaim his starting role next season.

If Peterson returns to the Cardinals, presumably under less lucrative terms, he’ll likely serve as Johnson’s backup.
