MLB Rumors: Yoenis Cespedes Told Teammates He Was Opting Out Of Season

Yoenis Cespedes has pulled an “Irish goodbye” with Mets.

New York expressed concern for his no call, no show Sunday after the outfielder failed to show up to the ballpark for the third game of the Mets’ four-game set series against the Atlanta Braves.

However, it seems at least a few people in the organization knew what was going on as the Mets publicly announced they didn’t know where the outfielder was and couldn’t reach him.

According to The Athletic’s Tim Britton and Marc Carig, before Cespedes mentioned he was opting out over COVID-19 concerns to a few teammates before cleaning out and leaving his hotel room. The message apparently never made to management.

Instead, his agent had to deliver the message after Sunday’s game had already begun, ending speculation about the player’s well being.

What an on-brand debacle for the Mets.
