Backes was traded to the Ducks in February 2020
About a year after being put on waivers by the Boston Bruins, David Backes is getting waived once again.
The Anaheim Ducks are waiving Backes, SportsNet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Friday.
Backes is in the final season of a $6 million-a-year contract he signed with the Bruins before the 2016-17 NHL campaign.
After getting routinely healthy scratched last season, Backes was put on waivers by Boston and ultimately traded to Anaheim in a move that also sent prospect Axel Andersson and a first-round pick to the Ducks in exchange for Ondrej Kase.
The Ducks have said they want to keep Backes around, so there’s a possibility they put him on waivers knowing a team probably won’t pick him up with that contract. They could keep him on the taxi squad in such a case, where he’ll be with the NHL team but won’t count against the cap.
