NFL Insider Has Strong Take On Bill Belichick Contract Extension

ESPN’s Adam Schefter doesn’t believe Bill Belichick’s newly reported contract extension will impact how Robert Kraft handles the Patriots head coach’s future.

One day after NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Belichick quietly agreed to a new “lucrative, multi-year” contract with New England this past offseason, Schefter said on “The Pat McAfee Show” that it won’t have any impact on the future Hall of Famer’s job security.

“He always keeps the details of his deals very private. And details of his deals never get out,” the prominent NFL insider said, as transcribed by A to Z Sports. “I don’t believe a deal now has any bearing on his future going forward. I really don’t. I think him and Robert Kraft will sit down at the end of the year and they’ll make a decision mutually about what they each want to do, whether he has an extension or not. And they can figure out the best way to handle the situation, what they believe is each side is better off doing, whether that’s staying together, whether that’s going your own ways.”

Schefter added: “And I don’t care whether Bill Belichick has a year left, three years left, five years left — it doesn’t matter. To me, they’re going to assess that situation on a year-to-year basis and figure out what’s best for the both of them.” 

As Schefter noted, the particulars of Belichick’s contract have not been — and likely will not be — reported, and there are conflicting reports on its length. Rapoport reported the new deal “locks (Belichick) in for the next several years,” while other outlets have expressed skepticism. NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran said he would be “stunned” if the pact stretched beyond the 2024 season.

Belichick quieted chatter about his possible firing Sunday by scoring a 29-25 win over the heavily favored Buffalo Bills, but those rumors will return if New England flops this week in Miami, where it hasn’t won since 2019.
