Bruins First-Round Draft Pick Reveals What Charlie McAvoy Told Him

It’s become tradition for current players to reach out to NHL Draft picks after they are selected to their team. When the Boston Bruins selected Dean Letourneau in the first-round of the 2024 NHL Draft, Charlie McAvoy was the first to reach out.

Letourneau is committed to go to Boston College in the fall, a well-known rival of Boston University. McAvoy played two seasons with the Terriers and has been a proud alumnus since parting with the school.

When the 18-year-old was drafted to the Bruins, McAvoy did not only reach out to send him a congratulations.

“I got a text from McAvoy after I got drafted,” Letourneau told the “Drop the Mitts Hockey” podcast. “He’s a Boston University Terrier so he was kind of just saying that he won’t hold it against me that I’m going to be an Eagle.”

The Bruins pipeline has a number of Eagles coming up, including Providence Bruins players Trevor Kuntar and Marc McLaughlin. Letourneau has some current teammates that are Bruins prospects with Andre Gasseau and Oskar Jellivik.

McAvoy does have Charlie Coyle on his side, as he also played for the Terriers.

Letourneau did meet another Hockey East alumnus in goaltender Jeremy Swayman at development camp. Swayman played for the University of Maine for three seasons before joining the Bruins.

The forward has the chance to make a large impact with Boston College in the next few years. The Bruins will be able to watch his development closely with TD Garden just down the road from Conte Forum.
