Jacoby Brissett Not Resting On Laurels Of Patriots Starter Status

Brissett revealed advice he gave to Drake Maye before training camp

The Patriots know who their starting quarterback will be at the start of training camp, but Jacoby Brissett knows how quickly things can change in the NFL.

Jerod Mayo on Tuesday said he believes Brissett is the most “pro-ready” quarterback in the room and is the most fit to be the starter. However, the New England head coach stressed there will be constant competition throughout training camp starting Wednesday. Brissett reacted to being called the starter by Mayo.

“Obviously, that’s the ultimate goal. Obviously, you don’t take things like that lightly,” Brissett told reporters Tuesday, per the Patriots. “I understand this league, and I understand how every day is a competition, and I look forward to that and I feed off that. Looking to go out there and prove it every day.”

Brissett spent his eight-year NFL career competing for starter gigs, so he knows firsthand what that experience is like heading into his ninth season in the league. All eyes will be on how Drake Maye performs in his first training camp, and Brissett had simple advice for the rookie signal-caller.

“It’s a competition. It’s work now,” Brissett said. “There’s no scholarships anymore. It’s your job. That’s what makes it so fun. You get to go out there and compete every day. You understand that somebody else is trying to take your job, and I learned that my rookie year with the guys I had in my room. That’s definitely something I’ve carried throughout my career so far, and that doesn’t change.”

Brissett has not shied away from being a mentor for a young New England side, but he’ll look to put his best foot forward as the Patriots prepare for the season.
