The New England Patriots offense could use more talented skill-position players, and they have the resources to acquire one.

Brandon Aiyuk is at the top of everyone’s minds since the star wide receiver reportedly requested a trade from the 49ers. New England reportedly was one of multiple teams to send an offer for the 26-year-old, but San Francisco rejected its offer that included a second-round pick.

While head coach Jerod Mayo can’t talk about specific targets, he didn’t rule out the idea of acquiring a “big player.”

“We’re always interested in getting the best players on our team, whatever that looks like,” Mayo told reporters Tuesday, per the Patriots. “We’re third on the waiver wire, as well. There’ll be quality players that get released for various reasons, and we’ll have an opportunity to continue to improve our roster.

“If you’re gonna sit there and ask me would we take a good player no what position, absolutely. Absolutely, if it helps us get better, not only today but also in the future.”

Tee Higgins also is theoretically available since he also is seeking a contract extension. However, the star wide receiver signed his franchise tag and hasn’t attempted to exhaust any leverage he has similar to what Aiyuk did.

The Cincinnati Bengals and 49ers are in the middle of their Super Bowl windows, so it’s unlikely they’ll part with their respective major pieces. However, the hope for an Aiyuk trade is there even if it is slim.
