A Patriots win with Drake Maye on the sideline subdued talk about the rookie quarterback in Week 1, but that changed in Week 2.
Jerod Mayo last week confirmed a report claiming Maye receives 30% of first-team reps in practices leading up to games. Such an approach is rarely used in the NFL, and one former quarterback believes the tactic is "malpractice" to both signal-callers in New England.
Mayo on Monday was asked if Maye's extended opportunities are "building toward something soon" in Foxboro, Mass. The question arrived one day after the Jacoby Brissett-led passing offense looked very weak in an overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks at Gillette Stadium. The first-year head coach wasn't interested in answering, though, and took a page out of his predecessor's playbook.
"For me, I'm focused on the Jets," Mayo said on WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show." "I'm not looking that far out. As an organization, we're still 100% behind Jacoby."

Brissett wasn't a disaster in Week 2, so there shouldn't be alarms sounding for a quarterback change in New England. But if the Patriots' offense struggles again in the Meadowlands, the cries for Maye to take over behind center undoubtedly will grow louder.
The longtime rivals will kick off the NFL's Week 3 slate Thursday night, with kickoff from MetLife Stadium scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET.
