Boston To Rename Bridge For Celtics Legend Bill Russell

The North Washington Street Bridge will be getting a new name and look

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu announced a bridge would be renamed to honor Celtics legend Bill Russell.

The North Washington Street Bridge connecting Charlestown with the city’s West and North ends has been under reconstruction with work scheduled to be completed this spring. The bridge is a block from TD Garden and will be the William Felton “Bill” Russell Bridge.

“The bridge renaming will honor his dedication to civil rights and the fostering of Boston’s youth and young athletes,” Wu’s office said Friday, per NBC Sports Boston.

Russell’s widow Jeannine Russell, current and former Celtics players and team leadership were expected to join Wu and other officials at an announcement Monday before the C’s begin their title defense Tuesday.

Bill Russell won 11 championships in 13 seasons and is also known for his civil rights work and breaking the color barrier as the first Black head coach. He died Aug. 1, 2022, at 88 years old.

The Celtics honored Russell when they wore a special No. 6 patch on their jerseys. And the NBA honored Russell by retiring his number around the league.
