The Jets reportedly went against the grain Tuesday in a variety of ways.
New York fired head coach Robert Saleh two days after dropping to 2-3 on the season with a Week 5 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London. The move was pretty unprecedented, as the Jets previously hadn’t parted ways with a head coach in-season since 1976.
Saleh’s actual exit also apparently was out of the ordinary. According to Pro Football Talk, the 45-year-old “was escorted out of the building by the team’s director of security” when he received word from ownership. Such measures reportedly were not taken when Saleh’s predecessor, Adam Gase, was fired by New York in 2021. PFT also acknowledged it’s “unusual” for a head coach to be taken out of a facility by security after being fired.
Saleh reportedly was not allowed to say goodbye to his players, some of whom were “shocked” by his firing. It marked a rough ending to a rough tenure, which saw Gang Green go 20-36 under Saleh’s watch.
Jeff Ulbrich will serve as the Jets’ interim head coach in wake of Saleh’s firing. New York is set to cap off the NFL’s Week 6 slate Monday evening when it hosts the rival Buffalo Bills.
