The Jacksonville Jaguars publicly aren’t sounding the alarms on Trevor Lawrence but reports on the quarterback tell a different story.

Head coach Doug Pederson all but confirmed Mac Jones would start this Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. Lawrence suffered a shoulder injury last week, but Pederson was optimistic it wasn’t a long-term issue.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on Saturday reported that Lawrence’s left shoulder was “more week-to-week than day-to-day.” The Jaguars play the Vikings this Sunday then the Detroit Lions next week. They’ll likely be 2-9 heading into their Week 12 bye. Fowler questioned if the Jags would comprise their franchise QB’s future after the bye.

“Wouldn’t count Trevor out. Tough dude,” a source told Fowler.

If Lawrence were to get shut down or get extended rest, that would be a huge benefit for Jones. He could use the second half of the season as a dress rehearsal to showcase he can still be a starting quarterback in the NFL. However, it could turn against him if he isn’t able to perform well, and Jacksonville chooses to turn to third-string signal-caller C.J. Beathard.

Patriots fans will keep a keen eye on Jones to see if this Sunday is the beginning of the former New England signal-caller’s run as the Jaguars starter.
