NESN Playground Project Seeks To Give Back To Community

NESN is partnering with multiple groups to build a playground in Worcester, Mass.

NESN always strives to find charitable ways to give back to the community, and this year, it aims to build another playground.

Last fall, NESN successfully unveiled its first playground in Roxbury. The design was built in collaboration with the children at the Yawkey Boys & Girls Club to build a playground that best fits them.

The second playground project is led and funded by NESN and its partners: the City of Worcester, Mass., Jack Barry Little League and the Make an Impact Foundation. It will be next to three baseball fields and is focused on younger children.

“During the summer, there’s baseball and softball at our fields all the time. There are a lot of kids with younger siblings that don’t participate in the league that like to play in the playground,” president of Jack Barry Little League Jay Dupre told NESN at a “Dream Day” event Friday. “It just brings everyone together in the community.”

A “Dream Day” event was held at Polar Park last Friday where kids from Jack Barry Little League and NESN volunteers spent the day coming up with ideas for the playground while also playing games.

“Teamwork is the baseline of what sports is about,” NESN COO Matt Volk said Friday. “We (hope) to build a playground that’s based on activity and sports, which is the baseline of NESN. … At NESN, we love being part of the community, bringing the WooSox, the Bruins and the Red Sox to everyone’s homes. A playground like this is really about you and the community.”

Dupre told NESN that the kids are looking forward to “something new” as the playground in place could use a different look that best fits what the community wants. The goal is to provide a way for kids to have fun playing sports in a holistic way that helps strengthen bonds within the community.

After the playground is built by NESN with help from the project’s partners, the playground is scheduled to open this spring at Harrington Field.
