Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran saw the Alex Bregman news Wednesday night.
And he reacted like most people in Boston.
“I’m excited,” Duran told reporters Thursday in Fort Myers, Fla., when asked about the Red Sox landing Bregman in free agency. “He’s a great player, and I know he’s a winner. I love to have that kind of mentality on the team.”
The Red Sox reportedly agreed to a three-year, $120 million contract with Bregman that includes a pair of opt-outs. He figures to play second base in Boston while giving the club some much-needed right-handed thump.
More Alex Bregman
Bregman has the reputation of a clubhouse leader, which should serve the Red Sox well as they seek their first postseason appearance since 2021. He won two World Series titles in Houston, the first coming in 2019 when now-Red Sox manager Alex Cora was the Astros’ bench coach.

“I’m excited to have another guy like that in the clubhouse,” Duran said of Bregman, whose hard-nosed baseball obsession mirrors his own. “Just plays the game hard, plays the game right. Just is going to be a good leader for us. That’s what I’m excited about.”
Duran, a first-time All-Star in 2024, is looking to solidify himself among MLB’s best players, a group Bregman belonged to for most of his Houston tenure. Both players could go a long way toward reestablishing a winning culture in Boston.
“Seems like we’re going to be pretty good,” Duran said of the Red Sox’s active offseason. “I always love to be the underdog, and I know there’s always people counting us out, and I just can’t wait to prove people wrong.”
The Red Sox went 81-81 in 2024 after last-place finishes in 2022 and 2023. Now, with Bregman joining the mix, the arrow definitely is pointing upward for Boston.
