The Boston Red Sox still haven’t announced who will be the Opening Day second baseman for the March 27 matchup against the Texas Rangers.

That decision should come during Boston’s two-game exhibition visit in Mexico. Kristian Campbell entered camp as the intriguing candidate and showed up in a major way Saturday to put the finishing touches on his campaign.

Campbell backed up starting pitcher Tanner Houck with a diving catch at second base against the Tampa Bay Rays. He followed it up later in the game with an opposite field home run to right field in the loss for the Red Sox. He showed Boston exactly why he appeals to the position to best optimize the roster with right-handed pop and capable defense.

Here’s the catch and the home run.

Campbell’s spring numbers aren’t exactly appealing after early struggles, but he’s turned it on for the Red Sox over the last week and homered along with Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer in MLB’s Spring Breakout Game series.

Boston still has five days to make the decision and the Red Sox would benefit from a full year of MLB development to start an intriguing career beginning for Campbell.
