The Boston Red Sox have a talented roster and postseason aspirations in 2025. Their offseason additions, promising prospects and established core provide the chance for a special season in Boston.
Obviously, every team faces adversity throughout the season. Injuries happen, players underperform, and the season brings ups and downs every year. For the Red Sox, however, they’ll specifically count on the emergence and production of a few players.
Here are four players that can make or break the season for the Red Sox in 2025.
Trevor Story
Boston does not need Story to be a Silver Slugger at shortstop.
The offense ranked in the top 10 in OPS in 2024 for the seventh straight season. Boston will hit regardless. What the team truly needs is Story to be healthy and keep his superb defense at shortstop as the captain of the infield. His presence makes a noticeable impact, and his role in improving the team’s infield defense is incredibly important.

He’s played just a season’s worth of games in his three years with the Red Sox. It’s time to put together his best Boston campaign.
Alex Bregman
Bregman’s signing made all the difference this winter and put the finishing touch on a now-capable roster.
His right-handed bat balances and strengthens the lineup. His glove improves the infield defense. His leadership cements the clubhouse culture. The Red Sox brought Bregman to Boston to be the ultimate difference-maker. He gets that chance in 2025.
Garrett Crochet
The Red Sox have watched their starting rotation falter and fatigue for three straight seasons and lacked a true horse at the top. Crochet’s tenure as an MLB starter is short but spectacular in potential.

Crochet’s stature and stuff make him the bonafide ace of the staff, and his ability to anchor the rotation will go a long way toward deciding what the Red Sox can be in 2025.
Garrett Whitlock
Finally, back in his dominant role in the bullpen, Whitlock is the settling arm of the relief core.
Aroldis Chapman plays a large part as the closer as well, but Whitlock’s multi-inning abilities to get outs and reset the bullpen makes him one of the most important players on the roster.
