The Red Sox made a significant investment on Friday.
Kristian Campbell officially signed his pioneering contract extension with Boston, bringing an end to weeks worth of negotiations between his representatives at Beverly Hills Sports Council and Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.
Breslow admitted that things came together pretty smoothly when speaking with media members on Saturday, except for one minor snafu.
The Red Sox stranded their own boss at the team hotel in Texas.
“This process can be contentious, it can be confrontational. There was none of that,” Breslow said, per team-provided video. “Danny (Horwitz) and I were negotiating down to the last moments, and we spent two and a half hours in the hotel lobby in Texas staring at each other and waiting for the other to blink. I realized that I missed the team bus, so Danny was kind enough to drive me over to the field. What could have otherwise been an awkward moment, was, in fact, endearing.”

Boston sure is glad that didn’t become an issue amid negotiations, because its investment is already looking like a good one. Campbell is off to a torrid start to his big league career, batting .423 with a pair of home runs and five runs batted in during his first eight games.
The Red Sox will hope he can keep the ball rolling when they look to win their first series at Fenway Park against the St. Louis Cardinals. NESN will have full coverage on Saturday, starting at 3 p.m. ET.
