Trevor Story wasn’t looking to make excuses after the Red Sox suffered their second straight loss.

There was an obvious factor Boston could have pointed to after falling 6-1 to Toronto on Tuesday night. It was an absolutely frigid evening on Jersey Street, as the first-pitch temperature was the third-coldest ever recorded at Fenway Park. But as Story stressed after his team fell to .500, the Red Sox can’t blame their poor collective performance on unfavorable weather.

“It’s tough, but both teams are playing under the same conditions,” Story told reporters, per The Athletic. “It’s one of those games doesn’t matter how you get it done, it might be dirty, it might be nasty, but got to find a way to get it done and we just didn’t do that tonight.”

Story was dead-on. Temperatures in the low 30s didn’t really seem to bother the visiting Blue Jays, who received a very sharp outing from their starter and logged multiple timely hits. The Red Sox, meanwhile, watched their ace labor through 5 2/3 innings partly due to sloppy defense.

Alex Cora similarly has no time for complaints about the weather, which was an important message to send given the upcoming forecasts in Boston. The Red Sox will try to handle the elements better Wednesday night when they meet the Jays for Game 3 of their series.
