J.D. Martinez transformed the Boston Red Sox offense when he joined the team in 2018, won a World Series title that season and boosted the team for five seasons.

He’s not the impact All-Star he once was, but even in his late 30s, Martinez can be a contributing hitter to better a major-league lineup.

MLB Network’s Greg Amsinger and Harold Reynolds pointed to where Martinez could sign with the season underway. Amsinger noted the Seattle Mariners are hitting under .200 as a team. The team’s failed to support an elite starting rotation even with a few capable bats in Randy Arozarena, Julio Rodriguez and Cal Raleigh. The duo floated the idea on Wednesday’s installment of “MLB Tonight” during the Mariners’ matchup with the Houston Astros.

“J.D. Martinez is sitting on the couch right now,” Amsinger said. “J.D. Martinez is watching this show right now. J.D. Martinez, two years ago, hit 30 home runs and drove in over 100 runs for the Dodgers. You need someone to help out J-Rod and Cal Raleigh in the middle and Randy Arozarena. It’s just not clicking right now in Seattle.”

“What a great name,” Reynolds said. “J.D. Martinez would be perfect, and he’s not going to cost you what he did in the winter or last year.”

The ex-Red Sox slugger can still make an impact in 2025 and there may not be an American League team in more need of thump in the order.
