The Boston Red Sox turned for external help with starting catcher on the injured list with a fractured finger.
Carlos Narvaez and Blake Sabol currently populate the position on the MLB roster and the Red Sox looked for more depth during Wong’s absence. That led Craig Breslow to make an extra move for organizational depth.
The Red Sox reportedly agreed to a minor-league deal with free-agent catcher Yasmani Grandal, per FanSided’s Robert Murray and MassLive’s Sean McAdam.
Grandal made sense for Boston this winter before the team brought in Narvaez as the primary backup for Wong. Now, Grandal joins his sixth team for his 14th big-league season. The reported deal comes as somewhat of a homecoming after the Red Sox drafted him late in the 2007 MLB Draft.
Grandal made his living with a high on-base percentage and earned a pair of All-Star selections in 2015 and 2019.
