Have the Patriots taken another step toward signing retired linebacker Junior Seau? It seems to be so.
Head coach Bill Belichick confirmed on Monday that Seau came to Foxborough for a tryout recently, which indicates that New England is on the brink of bringing him back for his 20th professional season.
According to The Boston Globe, Belichick admitted on WEEI that the team is close to re-signing the 40-year-old veteran and that he underwent a physical administered by the team.
"He did have a physical," Belichick said. "We haven't done anything yet. Is [bringing him back] a possibility? Yes."
If Seau does sign with the Patriots this week — and that move seems to be imminent, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter — it would be the third time he has come out of retirement to play for New England. He first returned to the league in 2006, and after retiring following the 2007 season, he made another comeback for the last four games of 2008.
In his last full season with the Patriots in 2007, the 12-time Pro Bowler registered 58 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks in 16 regular-season games.
