The Red Sox ALDS roster isn't quite complete yet, but on Tuesday, Terry Francona made at least one crucial decision.
With Nick Green out of commission for at least the next week, Jed Lowrie will serve as the backup infielder, according to The Boston Globe. Another potential candidate was Chris Woodward, but he is still tending to his wife, who recently gave birth.
Although Lowrie's surgically repaired wrist isn't 100 percent healed, his play over the past week or so proved that he can be counted on as a backup.
But just in case something happens to Lowrie, the Sox have called upon minor leaguer Gil Velazquez, whose contract with Boston will now be extended through the World Series. Had he not been added to the clubhouse over the weekend, he would have become a free agent on Monday.
Velazquez will not be activated yet, but if someone gets injured, he will be. Last season, when Mike Lowell went down during the ALDS, Velazquez was added to the roster as a backup infielder.
