Nick Green, Jed Lowrie Progressing Slowly

Nick Green, Jed Lowrie Progressing Slowly Though the starters appear to be feeling healthy for the Red Sox, the status of one of the key members of their bench is still very much in question.

Nick Green hasn't played since Sept. 16 due to a slipped disk that caused leg problems. The 31-year-old journeyman, who had settled nicely into his role with the Red Sox, worked out at Fenway Park on Thursday, hoping to take one step closer toward being ready to play. The results, however, weren't as good as he had hoped.

"Nothing was bad, it just wasn't what I wanted," Green told The Providence Journal. "I wanted to go out there and take ground balls like I'd normally take ground balls, and I didn't do it as well as I should, the way I wanted it to be. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't what I wanted.

"It wasn't a step back — I think my expectations are higher than they should be, probably. Any time you have high expectations and things don't turn out the way you want them to, it's always disappointing."

The situation wouldn't be quite so bad for the Red Sox if Jed Lowrie was healthy, but he's been battling injuries all season and has yet to show consistency since rejoining the Sox in September. Still, Lowrie, who hit a walk-off single in Game 4 of last year's ALDS, said he's ready to play as a utility man in the postseason.

"I feel comfortable doing that," he told the ProJo. "I've told [management] that, I played third [Wednesday] night, went over to short, I've taken some ground balls at second."

Lowrie expressed concern batting from the left side of the plate, saying his wrist fatigued throughout the course of that game.

However the situation shakes out, it — at the very least — adds meaning to otherwise meaningless games this weekend.
