The Red Sox have a shot to add an experienced arm to the bullpen, and the club — if interested — wouldn't need to trade anything away to obtain him for the stretch run.

On Thursday, the Pirates released struggling reliever Brendan Donnelly, according to MLB.com.

Donnelly, who made 27 appearances in an injury-plagued 2007 season for the Red Sox, has had a rough year for the Pirates and was released on Thursday with a 5.58 ERA in 38 appearances.

Last season, Donnelly was tremendous for the Marlins as he posted a 1.78 record in 30 appearances. He struck out 25 batters and earned two saves to go with a 3-0 record in 25 1/3 innings for the Fish.

The 39-year-old right-hander has a 3.22 ERA in 386 career appearances.
