Report: Celtics Won't Be Acquiring Rockets Swingman Shane Battier The Celtics are looking to make a move before the Feb. 24 trade deadline, but don’t expect to see Rockets swingman Shane Battier wearing green and white.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, a source close to the Rockets-Celtics Battier deal reported Monday night that the trade talks are off.

Earlier in the day, ESPN’s Marc Stein reported that Boston had interest in Battier, aka “the no stats All-Star.”

Battier’s defensive skills, ability to play around the perimeter, and expiring contract make him an intriguing prospect for the Celtics.

With the loss of Marquis Daniels (bruised spinal cord) and the uncertainty that comes with Delonte West‘s health, Celtics president Danny Ainge has spoken publicly about the team’s need for help in the backcourt.

Doc Rivers also acknowledged after practice Monday that the Celtics are exploring the market.

“We’re definitely looking to add another player,” Rivers told Gary Washburn.

Whether the Celtics and Rockets will be able to reach an agreement for a deal remains to be seen, especially considering that the Celtics lack much in terms of tradeable assets, reports Stein.

Washburn weighed in on the trade talks via Twitter, saying that it “would be nearly impossible to match salaries unless Celtics give up Kendrick Perkins or a combo of Nate Rob[inson], Marquis [Daniels] and a pick.”

Another option for the Celtics could be former LeBron James teammate Anthony Parker, whose name hit the rumor mill last week. However, a deal for Parker doesn’t seem likely given the high asking price of the Cavaliers who, according to Stein, are seeking more than just a first-rounder for the former Maccabi Tel Aviv star.

Battier’s expiring $7.4 million contract would give the Celtics a lot of options come next season, when All-Stars like Dwight Howard and Chris Paul could be on the move.

The Chicago Bulls, who will be getting Joakim Noah back later this week after being sidelined for 30 games, also have been linked to Parker. Adding Parker and Noah at the deadline could vault the Bulls right up to the level of Boston and Miami.

The NBA trade deadline is Thursday at 3 p.m. ET.
