Report: Mavericks Guard Rudy Fernandez Offered Deal by Real Madrid, Would Become Highest-Paid Basketball Player in Spain Most casual NBA fans would not consider Rudy Fernandez to be one of the league's superstars, but the 26-year-old has reportedly been offered a contract that would make him the highest-paid man in Spanish professional basketball.

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo reports that the Real Madrid basketball club has offered the Mavericks guard $4.35 million a year for six years to return to his home country — the most lucrative contract offer in the history of the Spanish ACB.

Fernandez, who was traded to Dallas less than two weeks ago, spent the first three years of his career with the Portland Trail Blazers, averaging 9.1 points per game as a shooting guard.

If he accepts this offer, Fernandez would play out the 2011-12 season — or as much of the season as the lockout allows — then leave to join Real Madrid.

Fernandez is slated to make $2.2 million this year playing for Dallas, and will become a restricted free agent at the end of the season.
