Devin McCourty Surprised to Be Named Captain During Second Season With Patriots FOXBORO, Mass. — When Patriots head coach Bill Belichick announced the team captains after Wednesday's practice, second-year cornerback Devin McCourty might have been the most surprised player among the bunch.

He admitted that much, but he was more than ready to take on that responsibility.

"It's a great honor," McCourty said of being named a captain. "When the players feel that you're deserving of that honor, it's an accomplishment. I'm kind of honored that my teammates would vote me that. I'm just taking it in stride and trying to continue my play."

McCourty said he won't change anything about his business, either on the field or in the locker room, noting that his teammates voted on him for who he has been, not who he should be.

"When your teammates get to vote for you, and show how much they believe in you or how much they're behind you as a leader, I think it's important for me to just try to continue to do what I've been doing," McCourty said.

McCourty, quarterback Tom Brady, left guard Logan Mankins, defensive lineman Vince Wilfork, linebacker Jerod Mayo and wide receiver Matthew Slater were named as the Patriots' six captains for the 2011 season.

"Guys just came up to me and told me to continue to be who you are," McCourty said. "Keep going out there trying to make plays. Be a good player. Kind of lead guys, get the younger guys going, try to show them the right direction."
