FORT MYERS, Fla. –– Cody Ross is off to a fast start — albeit against collegiate competition.

In his first game in a Red Sox uniform, Ross unloaded a solo homer and a grand slam en route to drubbing Northeastern 25-0 in spring training action. The outfielder even flashed a signature swing for Fenway Park, crushing the solo round-tripper over JetBlue Park's Green Monster.

"Any time you swing the bat well, whether it's in little league or against college pitching or major league pitching, it feels good," Ross said. "We swung the bats well. Definitely, I like [the dimensions] It plays a lot better for my swing than a lot of parks I've played in."

Although it wasn't major-league pitching, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine raved about Ross' swing and was encouraged about his potential impact this season.

"He got a couple of balls up and was able to elevate and hit the high fly ball that he does," Valentine said. "We've all seen that swing before in postseason, haven't we, in the Giants march. He's got that swing and I think it will play at Fenway."
