Blue Jays Rally Late Against Indians, Play Longest Opening Day Game in MLB HistoryAt least they get the day off tomorrow.

Thursday's 16-inning affair ended with the Toronto Blue Jays winning 7-4 over the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field on Thursday.

It goes down as the longest opening-day game in MLB history. Two others were tied at 15 innings — Philadelphia and Washington in 1926 and Detroit against Cleveland in 1960.

J.P. Arencibia ended this game with a three-run home run off reliever Jairo Asencio with no outs in the 16th, after Brett Lawrie and Omar Vizquel got on base.

The Indians had their chance to win this game earlier.

Earlier in the contest, Indians closer Chris Perez blew a three-run lead in the ninth. He allowed three hits, walked two batters and had three earned runs in only 2/3 of an inning. Edwin Encarnacion knocked in the two runs that tied the game, 4-4, with a double off of Perez with one out in the inning.

Justin Masterson pitched a solid eight innings in the no-decision effort. He had 10 strikeouts, allowing just one run.

The game finished with an elapsed time of five hours and 26 minutes. Both teams used a combined 14 pitchers who threw 540 pitches total.
