Alfredo Aceves’ Ability to Lock Down Ninth Inning Makes Him Amica Pitcher of the Week

Alfredo Aceves' Ability to Lock Down Ninth Inning Makes Him Amica Pitcher of the WeekAlfredo Aceves' ERA is slowly shrinking. The Red Sox closer has recently turned his season around after a dismal start, bringing his ERA down to 4.15.

Aceves struggled out of the gate this season, but he's quickly becoming very reliable at the back end of Boston's bullpen. The right-hander hasn't allowed a run in his last seven appearances, and he's converted his last nine save opportunities after blowing two of his first four.

This past week, Aceves picked up two saves against the Orioles, going 1 1/3 innings to lock down the ninth inning in his most recent outing on Wednesday. For the month of May, Aceves' ERA is 1.23.

When Andrew Bailey finally returns, it could spell the end of Aceves' closing duties, although he's proving that he's more than capable of succeeding in the role. Closers have to have ice water in their veins, and Aceves looks to have just that.

As a result of this past week's success, Aceves is the Amica Pitcher of the Week. And it might not be the last time his name pops up in connection with the honor.
