USA Basketball’s Triumph Not Enough to Earn Coach Mike Krzyzewski a Gold Medal

Coach K could be leaving London empty handed.

Despite coaching USA to a gold medal victory at this year’s Olympics, Mike Krzyzewski isn’t entitled to the same glory as the players, Yahoo! Sports points out. Only Olympic competitors receive medals for their success, meaning Krzyzewski is out of luck.

Not giving coaches medals is an interesting side note of the Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is obviously playing it safe — as it won’t have to worry about making any determinations regarding whether or not someone should be considered a coach — but there are some instances when withholding a medal just seems odd. Not giving Coach K a medal is one of those instances.

Krzyzewski put in plenty of hard work, managing a squad comprised of global superstars who may or may not have big egos to go along with their immense talent. One would think his ability to excel through the pressure would be enough for him to earn a little hardware. Guess not.

Maybe Michael Phelps could spare a medal or two.
