You can cross one power couple off of the list in the sports world.
Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin and his girlfriend, tennis star Maria Kirilenko, have broken off their engagement, R-Sports reported Monday morning. Kirilenko would not say why the two ended things but wished Ovechkin the best in his hockey career.
“I have made a decision to break up our engagement,” Kirelinko said. “There are a lot of reasons, but I wouldn’t want to go in detail. I’ll say just that our relationship is over, but I respect Sasha as a person and an athlete and sincerely wish him athletic success in the future.”
The two met at the U.S. Open in 2011 when Ovechkin was in New York to promote the NHL. He ventured over to her practice court, where the two struck up a conversation. They were engaged less than two years later.
Things had not been going as well for the couple in recent days, however. Instead of going to Wimbledon to support his fiancée, Ovechkin spent a week in Las Vegas.
Kirilenko is all business, though, and said she is just focusing on tennis for the time being.
“I’m currently concentrating on preparing for my tennis tournaments and I hope that soon I’ll be able to please my fans with news about my success as an athlete and not just in personal life,” Kirilenko said, via RMNB.com.
