Colin Kaepernick might have plenty of company should he continue his silent protest during Week 1 of the NFL season.
The San Francisco 49ers quarterback was the talk of the sports world after deciding to sit (and eventually kneel) during the national anthem before preseason games as a way to protest racial inequality in America.
Shortly after people took notice of Kaepernick’s protest, he started to gain support. Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane sat for the national anthem in the team’s preseason finale, and it sounds as if he might not be the only Seattle player to do so during “The Star-Spangled Banner” in Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins.
Wide receiver Doug Baldwin and linebacker Bobby Wagner could join the mix, but the Seahawks also want to make sure they send a message as a team.
“Anything we want to do, it’s not going to be individual,” Wagner said, according to the Seattle Times. “It’s going to be a team thing. That’s what the world needs to see. The world needs to see people coming together versus being individuals.”
Wagner wouldn’t go into specifics but did add “whatever we decide to do will be a big surprise.”
As Deadspin points out, Sunday marks the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. That should add another layer to an already polarizing situation.
Kaepernick likely will receive plenty of attention once again, as the 49ers host the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night, the final game of the season’s first week.
