Report: Jed Hoyer Close to Being Named Padres’ General Manger

Jed Hoyer started off in the Red Sox organization as a 29-year-old intern in 2002. This winter, just seven years later, Theo Epstein's assistant general manager may be making yet another giant leap, this time across the country.

Citing Major League sources, ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting that Hoyer is close to becoming the San Diego Padres' next general manager.

Padres CEO Jeff Moorad told the North County Times on Tuesday that he was nearing a decision on who will replace former general manager Kevin Towers, who was fired earlier this month after 14 seasons.

"I'm doing some phone follow-ups and am close to making a decision," Moorad said.

Hoyer, a Wesleyan alum, was one of the co-general managers who stepped in when Epstein stepped away from the position in 2005. He also interviewed for the Pittsburgh Pirates GM job in 2007 and met with the Washington Nationals to talk about their opening earlier this year.
