The source is Andre Agassi.
In his new autobiography, set for release next month, the tennis star details his own drug use which occurred in 1997, while he was still playing professionally. ESPN.com reports that the information was confirmed by the director of media relations at Knopf, the division of Random House publishing the book.
"Those excerpts contain revelations about Andre's use of crystal meth when he was a tennis player," Knopf told the New York Daily News.
Sports Illustrated writer Richard Deitsch first posted the information in a Twitter post:
"FYI: There's an off-the-charts book excerpt from Andre Agassi in the forthcoming SI: He admits to taking crystal meth during his career."
The post was later deleted. The aforementioned excerpt will be in this week's editions of SI and People.
Agassi, a former world No. 1 player who won eight Grand Slam singles tournaments, won the Olympic gold medal in the 1996 Games. He won more than $30 million in his career before retiring in 2006. He and former Grand Slam champion Steffi Graf are married with two children.
Agassi's book, entitled Open: An Autobiography, is due out on Nov. 9.
