ABC’s Wide World of Sports said it best: The thrill of victory. The agony of defeat. As French skier Marion Rolland can attest, the YouTube era has made the agony of defeat even more painful.
Rolland, the seventh-ranked women’s downhill skier in the World Cup, had gold-medal aspirations in Vancouver, but she saw those shot down after just six seconds Thursday.
After coming out of the gate, Rolland lost her balance and got up on the edge of her right ski before toppling over and off the course.
According to The Sun, she lay there sobbing as fans and other competitors gasped at the replays. Rolland is one of her country’s top competitors, and her crash left a lasting impact.
“Obviously, the morale is not too good,” a team spokeswoman told The Sun.
Adding insult to injury, or rather injury to insult, Rolland appeared to tweak her knee during the crash as well as her ego.
