On the eve of the Major League Baseball trade deadline, it is looking more and more like Mike Lowell will remain in a Red Sox uniform.
CSNNE.com's Sean McAdam is reporting that the Texas Rangers are the only team with "slight" interest in Lowell and that a deal involving the 36-year-old veteran seems unlikely at this point.
Lowell was set to be activated off the disabled list on Friday, but Red Sox GM Theo Epstein sat down with him and his agents and asked him to be patient for a couple of days.
The Red Sox and Rangers had reached a preliminary agreement in December that would have sent Lowell and cash to Texas in exchange for catcher Max Ramirez. Lowell has since battled injuries and limited playing time, hitting .213 with two home runs and 12 RBIs in 80 at-bats entering Friday.
The former Gold Glove Award winner played exceptionally well in a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket this past week, though. He went 11-for-22 with four home runs, four doubles and 10 RBIs during his five-game stint with the PawSox, which included three home runs on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Ramirez has split time between the Texas Rangers and Triple-A Oklahoma City. With Texas, he has two home runs, eight RBIs and a .217 average in 69 at-bats, while he has one home run and 12 RBIs to go with a .260 batting average in 104 at-bats with Oklahoma City.
