Kim Clijsters may have won the U.S. Open, but somehow, her standing in the world of professional tennis dropped some.
Despite winning the major tournament, Clijsters dropped from No. 3 to No. 5 in the WTA rankings.
As Yahoo Sports explains, Clijsters was awarded 2,000 points in the standings for winning this year's Open, but since she was defending the 2,000 points she got last year for winning the tournament, it had no effect on her ranking.
To put it in perspective, Venus Williams was knocked out in the fourth round of last year's Open, a finish that gave her 280 points. This year, she bowed out in the semifinals, but yet she gained 620 points.
As a result, she and U.S. Open runner-up Vera Zvonareva both passed Clijsters in the rankings.
