The Patriots have been in professional football since 1960, but they didn't become the New England Patriots until 1971.
The Pats played in the AFL until 1970 under original owner Billy Sullivan.
It was Sullivan who coined the nickname for the team, but it wasn't until 11 years later that the New England Patriots officially came into existance.
