Carl Crawford moved nimbly on a hit-and-run but played it safe by holding at third base later in the inning.
Crawford, playing for the Pawtucket Red Sox against the Durham Bulls as he continues his return from a strained hamstring, drew a full-count, one-out walk against right-handed pitcher Lance Cormier in the bottom of the third inning. He took off for second base with Ryan Lavarnway swinging, and took a wide turn at second when Lavarnway's hot grounder escaped the reach of Durham shortstop Ray Olmedo.
Crawford screeched to a halt and retreated, however. PawSox manager Arnie Beyeler played it safe later in the inning by holding Crawford at third base on a single to left field.
The PawSox left the bases loaded without scoring in the inning.
Crawford has handled one chance in the field through three innings, a second-inning single by Bulls catcher Robinson Chirinos.
