Phyllis Reffo swims in the 100- and 200-yard individual medleys, and the 50 and 100 breaststroke events for Pepperdine.
So what … right? Wrong.
Reffo is 49 years old and is a mother of two.
The former model walked on to the Pepperdine swim team this season, just a few years after her swimming career started when a junior college water polo coach spotted her in the pool. After two years of competing at said junior college — where she earned an associates degree in science — she then applied to Pepperdine and decided to take a shot at making the most of her two years of eligibility remaining.
“It is funny, because I’m older than some of my teammates’ parents,” said Reffo, who plans to major in physical therapy. “I’m just trying to live my life as best as I can every day. I’m not letting my age get in the way.”
