Men love football and women, so putting the two together seems like a recipe for success. That's the thought process behind the Lingerie Football League, which announced on Wednesday that five Canadian cities have been awarded market rights for the inaugural season of LFL Canada.
Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Quebec City and Montreal are the five new cities the LFL will call home beginning in fall of 2012.
The decision comes after the "All-Fantasy Game," the LFL's all-star game, was held in Hamilton on July 30. The Toronto Triumph played host to the Tampa Breeze on Sept. 17 in Toronto's debut home game. The success of those two events has pushed the league to expand its Canadian contingency, and the league plans further global expansion in the future.
The LFL, which debuted in 2009, has been successful since its inception. The U.S. brand started out with 10 teams in 2009 and enters the 2011 season with 12 franchises. At first, the games were only available on some MyNetworkTV affiliates, but MTV2 now airs 20 games per season. The playoff games, which were once only available as highlights, will be available in their entirety for the 2011-12 season.
LFL founder and chairman Mitchell S. Mortaza said, "As much success as the league has seen through its first two seasons in the U.S., we expect greater success in Canada due to its fanaticism around sports."
Via the LFL's official website, LFL360.com, LFL Canada will play a 12-week regular season, culminating with the league's first "Canadian Lingerie Bowl," currently scheduled to be held on Nov. 24, 2012.
