If looks like it could be the Red Sox or retirement for Jason Varitek and Tim Wakefield.

The two are reportedly receiving outside interest, but it might not matter. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Varitek and Wakefield will decide whether to continue their careers with Boston or retire.

The Sox have reportedly offered minor league deals to both players, but there are no guarantees that either would make the big club out of spring training.

Wakefield and Varitek are expected to make their decisions soon, as spring training is rapidly approaching. If they elect not to try to return, it will be the first time Boston enters a season without either of them since 1994.

Wakefield arrived in Boston as a free agent in 1995, while Varitek came over via trade in 1997. The two have become mainstays on the Red Sox roster since, with both earning two World Series titles and earning acclaim for their grit and professionalism.

Varitek hit .221 with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs in 222 at-bats last season, while Wakefield went 7-8 with a 5.12 ERA.
